Beautiful Mind

The study of mind in movement and writing with Andrea Juhan and Lori Saltzman

Dancing in all its forms cannot be excluded from the curriculum of all noble education; dancing with the feet, with ideas, with words, and, need I add that one must also be able to dance with the pen?
- Friedrich Nietzsche

I’m not a dancer.          I’m not a writer.

How many times have we heard, or uttered, these words?

The mind is a fascinating, creative dancer. Not the mind we often equate with the brain alone. The beautiful mind is an organic, connected thread of energy and information that runs through every nerve plexus in your body and between bodies. The capacity of our highly developed human intelligence is far beyond the wonders of technology and space travel. When we engage the twin practices of embodied movement and words on paper, we generate creative, healing possibilities that directly change our minds.

In this series, we’ll study the remarkable neurobiology and originality of our full-bodied mind. When we cease to separate mind, body, and other, our movement practice will stir up infinite sensations, memories, beliefs and stories. Similarly, when we add the art of writing words, we learn to listen to the mind’s rich, spontaneous dictation rather than editing ourselves into grammar or form.

Pre-requisites: a childhood, puberty, a passion or two, someone you miss after all these years, a secret talent, your share of heartbreaks, rituals you can’t start your day without, memories.
